We encourage all who learn about this bill to take the fullest measures afforded by the Constitution to stop it. Any citizen of the United States has the right to lawfully contact their representatives in Congress and ask that this bill be stopped.  When powerful and wealthy companies finance lawmakers, significant action may be required in order to stop legislation which is detrimental and unconstitutional.  In whatever way possible, contact your representative.

The authors of the excellent site www.stoppoliceware.com correctly point out that a snail mail letter is the most effective way to contact your representative.  (These guys even have sample letters, faxes and phone scripts. Awesome...)  It shows that you have invested time and the money for a stamp, and have more than a minor interest.  However, due to the skittishness of Congressfolks to receive mail (the whole anthrax letter thing), it is a good idea to back up your snail mail with a fax or email. If you like the way that a particular website expresses a point, urge you representative to visit it.  Many sites exist which express clear, reasonable views from intelligent members of the technology community.

If it isn’t possible to send a letter, then try calling or faxing. Or, if that can’t be done, email.  This isn’t terribly effective, but it’s better than letting the bill pass uncontested.

To find your senator by state, scroll down the window below. If you are using a “classic” browser (ahem... ancient?) you made need to just click on the link http://www.senate.gov/contacting/index.cfm and choose ”By State” or “By Name” on the left.

Finally, the Electronic Frontier Foundation offers boatloads of great stuff. Particularly good is http://www.eff.org/congress.html, which has lots of information about contacting your senator.

Now, thanks to the magic of DHTML, and straight from the Senate servers...
